“What would you like for your birthday?” Sarah asked her son, Tommy. “I won’t be having one,” Tommy replied.

"Why not?" Sarah asked, taken aback.
“I just won’t,” he explained with a shrug. “The new world will be here by then. No one has birthdays in the new world.”

Sarah smiled, amused by her son’s vivid imagination. “But won’t you be sad without a birthday?”

Tommy looked perplexed, as if his mom had said something stupid. “No one's sad in the new world.”

“No one's sad!?” Sarah raised her eyebrows playfully. “I want to live in this ‘New world’ of yours."

Tommy turned and looked at his mother very soberly. “No one lives in the new world, Mom.”

“Well then, where do they live?” Sarah asked. Her son’s sudden dourness had caught her off guard.

As the world plunged into darkness, he replied, "They don't."
